Date: June 1997

Subject(s):

Grade Level(s): 1, 2

Description:

Children need to learn the importance of bicycle safety. This lesson will show them safety tips and information for safe bicycling.

Goal:

Students will have a basic understanding of safe bicycling.

Objectives:

  1. The students will learn and be aware of traffic laws.
  2. The students will learn about traffic signs and hand signals.
  3. The students will educate their peers about safe bike riding.
Background Information:

Bicycle safety information is available from the local law enforcement center.

Materials:

Procedure:
  1. Gain attention by showing a bicycle helmet.
    • Ask the students what the helmet is used for and why it is used.
  2. Ask the students what bicycle safety is.
    • List safety tips for them to abide by. (e.g., use hand signals when making a turn or never carry passengers on a bicycle)
  3. Discuss traffic signs.
    • Show pictures of traffic signs and ask the students what the sign is, and what the sign means.
  4. Ask the students what they should do in dangerous situations. (e.g., if a student must ride in the dark, they should wear light color clothing)
  5. Demonstrate proper hand signals. Bicycle riders are part of traffic and have to abide by traffic rules.  Teach right hand turn, left hand turn, slowing down, and the stopping signal.
  6. Have each student come to the front of class to share a safety tip they learned.
  7. Workbooks and pamphlets from law enforcement centers are available. Students can work on the many activities in their workbooks.
Assessment:

Assessment can be the observation from the sharing of the students tips, and from demonstrating the proper hand signals.
