Description:
Students will create posters of entertainment activities in their community. They will do research of what forms of entertainment are in the community by first using phone books, brochures, and brainstorming with the class. When completed the students will display their work by putting it together to give it a quilt effect.
Background Information:
This activity is a continuation of studying about my Town. Students are learning about the community they live in and its different components such as people, industry, entertainment, services, laws, education, etc.
Goals:

The students will be able to describe a community and its components.

The students will be able to identify recreation as one of its components.
Materials:
-
Overhead or chalkboard
-
Phonebook
-
Brochures
-
12 x 18 drawing paper
-
Pencils
-
Crayons, colored pencils, or markers

Black felt tip pens
Procedure:
-
Using the overhead, brainstorm with students what the possible places of recreation are in their town.

When the list is compiled have students take one form of entertainment and create a poster to advertise it.

Students should cover the entire sheet of drawing paper using the phone book, brochures, or from practical experience as resources.

When brochure is completed have each student describe their poster and it's component.

Hang poster on a wall or in the hallway outside the classroom door to create a quilt on Entertainment in My Town.
Assessment:

Ask students to name different forms of entertainment in their community.

Ask students to compare the entertainment component to other components that make up a community.
