Sometimes slave traders would purchase slaves at an auction. They would then march them, sometimes for weeks to a new location and sell them for a profit.

Read the passage on page 53 of "To Be a Slave" by Julius Lester (New York: The Dial Press, Inc., 1968) which describes one of these slave traders.
